The Montecarlo Casino comes along a little later and it was part of the Cigars of the Pharoah series from 1932 to 1934. Situated in Montecarlo itself, the casino plays only a minor role as a setting. It is, however, a place where several key characters hang out, and it’s interesting to see such an early example of a comic using a casino as a location.

The Iceberg Lounge: DC Comics

Fictional Gotham City is home to the legendary Batman, but it’s also inhabited by a host of villains. Among them is the notorious Penguin, who spends a part of his time hiding out at the Iceberg Lounge.

In the heart of Gotham City, the Iceberg Lounge is a casino owned by Penguin himself. Also known by the unlikely name of Oswald Cobblepot, he hosts many of Gotham’s less law-abiding citizens, and the casino is something of a haven, away from the Caped Crusader.

While the Iceberg Lounge has been featured in comic books for many years, it’s maintained its place in the superhero story through the ages. The 2022 movie, The Batman, uses the casino for a memorable scene where Bruce Wayne’s alter ego fights off a series of hired goons before Penguin intervenes.

Area 52 Casino: Marvel Comics

The Marvel comic book series carries the highest density of fictional casinos. Many are traditional locations, but Area 52 is a little different. As you may have guessed from the name, the venue is run by aliens, more specifically a sub-species known as ‘Greys.’

The casino appears exclusively in the Iron Man series and has so far played only a minor role for Marvel. Perhaps the unusual set up and sinister owners will lead to more appearances for Area 52 in the future.

The Hellfire Club

We stay with Marvel Comics for the final entry on this list. The Hellfire Club isn’t a public casino, but it’s a private establishment where high stakes card games take place, so it qualifies for entry.

The club offers a haven for supervillains and is frequented by shady characters from the underworld along with several corrupt businessmen and politicians. The activities that go on behind its doors naturally attract the heroes in the Marvel story and the venue is mostly associated with the X-Men.
